Stainless Steel flanged gate valve has a threaded stem that has a gate going inside the main body of the valve. It cannot be used as a control valve. The 316 Stainless Steel Gate Valve is used in sour water services to open and close operations. The twisting of the threaded stem inserts the gate slowly and prevents the water hammer effect on the gate as well.

For general corrosive services, less corrosion resistant 304 Stainless Steel gate valve can be used. The gate valve can be designed as clockwise opening or counterclockwise opening or closing.
